I recently read that omega-3 supplementation may be beneficial in treating Alzheimer's. The author stated that it could be recommended to those with Alzheimer's or dementia symptoms as it is relatively safe. Since the Mediterranean diet is rich in dietary omega-3's, perhaps that's the component that is improving cognitive function. This is also great news since it is better to consume omega-3 fatty acids through you're diet rather than in supplements.

Another mediterranean food item that are great for improving cognition is virgin coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil (VCO) have also been shown to improve cognitive functions in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease. VCO are obtained from fresh, mature kernel of the coconut by mechanical or natural means, without undergoing chemical refining. It is rich in medium chain triacylglycerol (MCT) that are shorter triglyceride length and smaller molecules making them more rapidly absorb and hydrolyze in the body. In Alzheimer’s it provide an alternate source of energy for the brain in form of ketones body and also act as a great antioxidant. Supplementing VCO for regular cooking oil can improve cognitive functions and improve other neurodegenerative diseases.
